She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Preston; daughter, Barbara Lynne Charters; brother, Daniel Fowler; sisters, Jessie (Fowler) Wilson and Imogene (Fowler) Lean and parents, Henry and Margaret (Fraser) Fowler. Elizabeth is survived by her son, Stephen Charters (Marilyn); daughter, Sharon Charters; grandchildren, Preston Smith (Andrea), Jonathan Fischer, Lindsay Fischer, Sarah Fischer (Ryan), Pamela Fulton (Chris), Julia Lavery (Jim), Thomas Charters (Janelle) and her 11 great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth was born at her home on Charlotte Street on June 6, 1927 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. From childhood she had a great love of the outdoors, good books, poetry and music. She was an advocate for education, especially developing the creativity in children for writing and art which fostered her career as a teacher. She taught for 32 years in New Brunswick’s elementary schools in Fredericton and Oromocto and served as the secretary for the New Brunswick Teacher’s association and a member of the Christian Education Committee. Her faith was an important part of her life and she served as a member of the New Maryland United Church and had previously served on the Board of Stewards as well as being a member of the United Church Women and the Women’s Institute in New Maryland. Elizabeth was also a member of a writing group which she greatly enjoyed. Family and close friendships were very important to her. Below is a poem she wrote, dedicated to those important people in her life:
In after years when you
The days of pleasure past
And think of joyous hours
That all have flown so fast;
When some forgotten
tune you hear
Brings back past scenes for thee
And gently claims your listening ear
Keep one kind thought for me.
Elizabeth will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. Memorial donations can be made to the New Maryland United Church or charity of the donor’s choice.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the New Maryland United Church in Nasonworth, N.B., officiated by Rev. Dr. Kelly Burke.
Thank you to those who dedicated their time with compassionate care to Elizabeth at York Care Centre.
McAdam’s Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
