It is with great sadness that the family of Berit Smerdon announces her passing on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 at the age of 82 years.
Berit (nee de Lukowicz) was born January 5th, 1937 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Karen (Hansen) Wadkin and Alfred de Lukowicz. Berit will be forever remembered by her loving and devoted husband Gerald whom she married on March 29th, 1958; three sons Mark, Julian and Peter; daughter-in-law Nicky; and five beautiful grandchildren, Chelsea, Kieran, Amelia, Loghan and Coulter.
Berit loved to sing, play piano and dance when she was younger. As a child, she enjoyed going to the ballet in Copenhagen and London with her father. Berit loved and appreciated all forms of Art and enjoyed visits to Art Galleries and attending concerts.
Berit was a great story teller. She loved sharing memories with her grandchildren about their fathers’ and uncles’ exploits, as well as the family’s many camping adventures across Europe and Newfoundland. Berit also loved cooking and entertaining, which connected family and friends far and wide with her and Gerald, and each other. She was famous in the music community in New Brunswick for her squares at the annual Music Camp Barbeque hosted on Berit and Gerald’s Harvey Estate.
Berit spoke multiple languages - English, German, Danish, Italian and French. She was a voracious reader. Berit completed two years of law study before coming to Canada. Once landed, Berit worked for a lawyer in Newfoundland and later for the Arts Council in New Brunswick. She finished her career in partnership with Gerald, as the manager for their home-based psychology business.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held from the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow the service. For those who wish, donations in Berit's memory can be made to the DECH Foundation, UNB Summer Music Camp, The Fredericton Playhouse, or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
