Ilona Mary Pader
Ilona (Klausnitz) Pader passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 12, 2019 at the age of 94 following a brief illness at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born on June 19, 1924, in Gödöllő, Hungary, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ilona (Ballog) Klausnitz. Ilona was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
While still living in Hungary, Ilona apprenticed as a milliner creating stylish hats for her clients. She later went to secretarial school and worked as a secretary at the Research Institute (1950-1952) and the Pharmaceutical Research Institute (1952-1954), both in Budapest. She was known for her lightning fast typing skills. She typed to dictation, easily keeping pace with even the fastest talkers.
With her husband and son, she fled Hungary following the student uprising against the communist regime in 1956 and escaped to an Austrian refuge camp. After a brief stay there they lived in Ireland while awaiting approval to move to Canada. After coming to Canada, Ilona worked again as a milliner and seamstress. Her clients traveled from as far as Edmundston for one of her hats. She was also an inspired seamstress who created ball gowns, wedding gowns, ladies’ suits, and a wide variety of clothing.
Ilona treasured her family and friends whom she enjoyed hosting for frequent gatherings at her home. She cherished her Hungarian heritage playing an active role in the celebrations commemorating the Hungarian Revolution. Ilona’s favourite place to be was her "little brown bungalow" on Simcoe Court where she grew lovely flower beds and her prized rhododendron. She did manage to tear herself away however to travel the world, even into her later 80’s. She was kind and generous, naturally inquisitive, intelligent, always seeking to improve and above all, courageous. Ilona gave back to her community volunteering for many years at the Fredericton Community Kitchen.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, of 64 years, John Joseph Pader of Fredericton, NB; daughter, Kathy Pader (Bruce Davis) of Fredericton, NB; niece, Anniko Klausnitz of Hungary and a nephew, Leslie Klausnitz of Windsor, ON.
In addition to her parents, Ilona was predeceased by her son, Peter Andrew Pader and all 3 brothers.
The family wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Governor Hall Shannex for their care and many kindnesses extended to Ilona, Dr. Saira Athar her family doctor, and for outstanding care from the nurses at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital (4 South West), and physicians Dr. Mohammad Khaleduzzamen, Dr. Deborah Ginson, Dr. Ashla Pond, and Dr. Gordon MacDonald.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at McAdam’s Funeral Home from 6 – 8 pm. A celebration of Ilona’s life will be held at J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 2pm. Interment will be in the Hermitage Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations in Ilona’s memory may be made to Fredericton Community Kitchen, Canadian Red Cross, Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
