With heartfelt sadness, we announce the death of Helen Elizabeth MacFarlane, age 99, on November 12, 2019, at Thomas Hall, Shannex in Fredericton, NB.
Born in Sussex Corner, NB, daughter of the late R. Wesley and Alice (Bennett) MacFarlane, Helen graduated from Sussex High School, Provincial Normal School and UNB. She taught in several schools in New Brunswick, was assistant to the County Superintendent of Schools of Albert and Westmorland Counties, then taught at the Teacher’s College and retired from the Faculty of Education at UNB in 1980.
Helen was a member of St. Paul’s United Church, St. Paul’s UCW (life member), Retired Teacher’s Association, and the UNB Retired Employees Association. She was a strong supporter of many charities.
Helen is survived by a niece, Elizabeth McNeil (David) and a nephew, Brent both of Winnipeg, as well as a nephew, Bruce MacFarlane (Linda) of Vancouver. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Kenneth.
A memorial service for Helen will be held at J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Friday, December 6, 2019 at 11 am, with a reception to follow. She and her family wish to express their thanks to the staff at Windsor Court and Thomas Hall, Shannex for their excellent care and acknowledge Helen’s special friends, Mary Matchett and Garda Clark.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations to the Helen MacFarlane Scholarship, or Helen MacFarlane Graduate Fellowship at UNB, would be appreciated by the family.
